JACK Thistledown Racino debuted its new 12,000-square-foot outdoor playground last week that features multiple gaming machines and allows smoking.
The opening of the two-story outdoor venue called Revel Oak marks the first major update to the Ohio-based North Randall racing and gaming complex.
With ventilation slats on three walls allowing the free flow of fresh air, the new area is technically located outside the Racino and thus allows the smoking portion of the Racino’s customers to light a cigarette while playing the available slot machines. However, it should be noted that it is fully covered and equipped with heating so that it can accommodate players even on the coldest days.
The newly launched space currently features 250 of the 1,700 JACK Thistledown slot machines, or video lottery terminals, as they are known in Ohio gambling law. Property officials said last week there is room for about 100 more gaming devices in the yard by the time state-imposed coronavirus-related space restrictions are lifted.
However, the property’s general manager, Angela Matthews, noted that, during the year after the pandemic, they learned that many of their players appreciate more space and that they would be able to keep things as they are after restrictions are relaxed.
A space for everyone
Ms. Matthews further noted that her goal with the new outdoor area was to create “Something for everyone; not just for people who smoke “ and that they wanted the patio to feel comfortable.
The new space is located at the front of the property and is accessible from the game room. The facility offers users unobstructed outside air flow and is equipped with a commercial grade exhaust system.
Its design includes wood accents, greenery and unique lighting that further accentuates the outdoor setting.
The old courtyard of the Racino will stay open. It has a low ceiling and a concrete floor. It has been heavily promoted as the property’s smoking area. Under Ohio law, smoking is strictly prohibited inside state and Racinos casinos.
Property officials did not disclose how much was invested in the new space. JACK Thistledown first opened its doors to mid-1920s as a racetrack. Horse racing is still held on the premises. The portion of the casino with video lottery terminals was added in the summer of 2013. At the time, it was owned by the Las Vegas casino operator Caesars Entertainment.
JACK Entertainment, formerly Rock Gaming, purchased JACK Thistledown along with JACK Cleveland Casino and JACK Cincinnati Casino in 2016. In 2019, the company entered into an agreement to sell its Cleveland and JACK Thistledown casino to the VICI Property real estate investment trust in a $ 843.3 million cash settlement.
VICI then re-leased the two properties from JACK Entertainment under a triple network master lease. The casino operator pays $ 65.9 million in annual rent to the REIT.
